Symptoms of Psychosis in Bipolar Disorder
Psychosis in bipolar disorder can occur during severe manic or depressive episodes, leading to a break from reality. Recognizing these symptoms is important for timely treatment and support.
Psychosis or Psychotic Symptoms Related to Bipolar Disorder
Sometimes, severe episodes of mania or depression include symptoms of psychosis (also called psychotic symptoms).
Common psychotic symptoms include:
- Hallucinations – hearing, seeing, or otherwise sensing things that are not
- Delusions – an unshakeable conviction not held by others. Types of delusions include persecutory (“someone is out to get me”), grandiose (“I have special powers”), somatic (“my body is infested with parasites”), and referential (“TV shows are sending me secret messages”).
- Symptoms that may resemble schizophrenia or another severe mental illness
