Types of Bipolar Disorder: Bipolar I Disorder, Bipolar II Disorder, and More
Bipolar disorder is a complex mental health condition that affects mood, energy levels, and the ability to function in daily life. While many people are familiar with the dramatic mood swings associated with bipolar disorder, fewer realize that there are several distinct types. Understanding these variations is key to recognizing symptoms and seeking appropriate treatment.
Types of Bipolar Disorder
While there are many forms of bipolar disorder, the most common are:
- Bipolar I disorder – With this classic form of the disorder, the individual experiences the extreme highs (mania) and lows (depression).
- Bipolar II disorder – With this form, individuals experience only mild highs or hypomania, with symptoms that are much less intense or severe.
- Bipolar spectrum disorder – This includes a range of conditions that share features of bipolar disorder but may not meet the full criteria for Bipolar I or II.
- Rapid cycling bipolar disorder – Defined by four or more episodes of mania, hypomania, or depression within a single year, making it a particularly challenging form to manage.
- Bipolar disorder, NOS (not otherwise specified) – Used when symptoms do not neatly fit into any of the established categories but still cause significant distress and impairment.
