Dr. Dowling, a highly regarded psychiatrist in the Cincinnati area, focuses on maximizing time with his patients in order to truly understand their individual stories attempting to offer them hope and a sense of possibility.

Prior to joining the staff at the Lindner Center of HOPE, Dr. Dowling contributed to the local field of psychiatry from a variety of venues. Dr. Dowling was a partner in the well-respected psychiatry private practice group, the East Hollister Group. He served on the Medical Staff for Central Clinic, a community mental health agency. He continues to be involved in community psychiatry by providing the majority of the psycho-pharmacological supervision to the third-year University of Cincinnati psychiatric residents. Dr. Dowling has served as the Consulting Psychiatrist for Xavier University for the past 8 years. Currently, Dr. Dowling is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and the Assistant Residency Training Director in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience at the University of Cincinnati. Additionally, he is the Medical Director for Resident Psychotherapy Clinic, a clinic he helped to create in order to enhance the residency training experience and the community’s access to therapy resources.

His outpatient work focuses on integrating appropriate psychotherapy modalities and evidence-based psychopharmacologic management in order to optimize treatment response in an attempt to restore or improve the patient’s quality of life. Dr. Dowling has a particular interest in working with and treating young adults representing a wide range of mood, anxiety spectrum, and primary thought, substance abuse, and personality disorders. Overall, he enjoys working with a diverse patient population.

Dr. Dowling is the Director of Medical Education at the Center coordinating medical student and psychiatric resident rotations. Additionally, he serves as the Center’s Medical Staff Vice-President and is the Chairperson of the Education Committee. He is a current member of the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Dowling has also participated in research, serving as a Clinical Research Assistant in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Cincinnati. He has co-authored a case study on Pregabalin Treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder which was published in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology.

Dr. Dowling’s honors include being named one of the recipients of 2009 University of Cincinnati College of Medicine Dean's Award for Excellence in Teaching. Additionally, he was named 2005 Laughlin Award Winner for Excellence in Psychiatry and 2001 Psychiatry Student Excellence Award from the University of Cincinnati Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience.
