Lindner Center of HOPE Encourages Participation in World Suicide Prevention Day, September 10
September 10, 2016 is World Suicide Prevention Day. Lindner Center of HOPE, in support of the International Association for Suicide Prevention, is encouraging everyone to participate in recognizing the effect of suicide and help prevent suicide by lighting a candle at 8 p.m. on September 10. The candle will be in remembrance of those lost to suicide and for the survivors of suicide. A candle may be lit by a window and/or an image of a candle can be posted on social media.
The World Health Organization estimates that over 800,000 people die by suicide each year – that’s one person every 40 seconds. Up to 25 times as many make a suicide attempt. The tragic ripple effect means that there are many, many more people have been bereaved by suicide or have been close to someone who has tried to take his or her own life. This is happening in spite of the fact that suicide is preventable.
