Psychiatric Inpatient Hospitalization at Lindner Center of HOPE

Lindner Center of HOPE has 48 private rooms – three 16-room units – for acute hospital stays. Cincinnati Children’s at Lindner Center of HOPE, supported by Lindner Center of HOPE clinical experts, provides stabilization for struggling adolescents (12-17 years old) on the adolescent unit. Meanwhile, the needs of adults and seniors are addressed on two separate adult units.

Patients may require psychiatric inpatient hospitalization if symptoms are severely disabling or there is risk of harm to self or others. Following a diagnostic evaluation by a multidisciplinary team, treatment specific to the needs of the patient focuses on quickly resolving serious and life-threatening symptoms. Stays can range from overnight to two or more weeks, with a goal of releasing a patient to a step-down level of care. A person admitted to an inpatient setting might be in the acute phase of a mental illness and need help around the clock.

When is acute inpatient care needed?

While each individual’s case is unique, patients recommended for acute inpatient care typically exhibit one or more of the following:

  • A danger to self, others, or property
  • Unable to complete daily activities or struggling to function at work
  • Unable to meet basic physical needs such as eating or sleeping
  • Unable to benefit from other types of treatment

A full assessment is recommended to determine treatment. However, the following questions can be helpful to determine if an individual would benefit from psychiatric inpatient hospitalization*:

  • Have you wished you were dead or wished you could go to sleep and not wake up?
  • Have you actually had any thoughts of killing yourself?
  • Have you had any thoughts of harming others?
  • Have your symptoms kept you from attending work/school?
  • Have you experienced changes in appetite?
  • Have you been having trouble sleeping?
  • Have you been able to care for yourself (e.g., hygiene, obtaining food, etc.)?

*A full assessment by a licensed clinician is recommended for every patient to determine the appropriate treatment plan. If you or a loved one answer “yes” to any of these questions, please reach out to us for help.
